Universities – UCL

Creating tomorrow’s leaders

This ambitious programme aims to create the leaders of the future through a mix of training and intensive summer research periods. Every year there are 25 fully funded scholarships and it is open to current first year undergraduate students in any discipline.

The three-year programme runs at high-ranking universities around the world and is fast becoming regarded as an indicator of exceptional academic and leadership potential. It is a chance for first-year students to get involved in research, working with academic staff on questions of global significance. It helps them develop and practise leadership skills in preparation for life after graduation. Participants will become part of a network of high-performing students from across the programme’s universities.

The programme offers Laidlaw scholars the opportunity to immerse themselves in rigorous leadership training, and allows them to undertake two fully funded six-week periods of intensive research in the summer holidays of their first and second years of study.

There are two application routes. Students can choose a summer project from the list which is published in early November. These usually form part of a larger research project that the supervisors are already running. Alternatively students can apply for any project that interests them - it does not even have to relate to their current area of study. However, the key criteria for that project must be met – these are listed on the UCL website. Students will need to find a suitable member of academic staff within UCL to agree to supervise them and the project must be realistically achievable within six weeks. Students who choose their own project will need to be highly self-motivated. The experience will allow them to develop their problem solving and interpersonal skills, and achieve the satisfaction of completing their own piece of research.

Sharing the vision

All this is made possible thanks to the vision of one man - Lord Laidlaw of Rothiemay. This prestigious programme is generously funded by him and builds on his commitment to supporting undergraduate student development and education.

The UCL Laidlaw Scholars page includes a comprehensive Frequently Asked Questions section. Visit the UCL scholars page for more details on application details and dates.
