I am a third year student at the university of Hong-Kong and also a first year Laidlaw scholar.

My long-term future career goal is to become a scientist in statistics so I need to develop my technical skills and soft skills at the same time.  Laidlaw provided me the chance to accumulate skills and allows me to prepare for future opportunities and challenges.

Dennis Chai-Chung Chin - Light Curve Data to Detect the Exo-Planets

I have been involved in leadership roles in the past however have always been with people from a similar background.  The Laidlaw scholarship provided me the opportunity to work and learn from different people of various cultures. I developed my leadership skills and can now lead a team to work more efficiently. I would highly recommend doing this leadership training as, from my observation many scholars place focus on research skills but they lack the leadership skills. This experience enables them to develop their communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills.


My project is to discover exo-planets,. I am actually from a statistical background so not astronomy but my supervisors provided me with the basic knowledge to bridge the gap between statistic and astronomies. From there I was able to build up the knowledge needed to analyse the data and venture into the field of astronomy.  The Laidlaw scholarship was able to help facilitate my research by providing me access to the observatory and helping me attain equipment for processing large quantities of data. An important skill I learned in my research was how to present my thoughts and findings concisely and precisely.



I’ve been Laidlaw scholar for about half a year and I have developed connections with people from different subject areas. I find this interesting, as their way of thinking is quite different from mine, which has helped expand my horizons. Being with these people has taught me lessons outwith academia and has given me better understanding of leadership and cultures.
